The New Hope Human Rights Commission has up to 10 members, including up to two students from Independent School District 281. Adult members serve two-year terms, and student members serve one academic year from Sept. 1 through Aug. 31.
The commission works with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights to promote equal opportunity in housing, employment, public accommodations, public services and education.
The commission also advises the City Council on human rights laws, issues, policies and programs. At the direction of the City Council, it provides educational opportunities related to federal and state human rights laws and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and may partner with local organizations, agencies and other human rights commissions.
Human Rights Commission Mission
The Human Rights Commission (HRC) protects and promotes the respect, dignity and rights of all individuals and groups by serving as a bridge between the community and local government.
The commission works to create an inclusive environment where every individual can fully participate in community life by focusing on several key responsibilities:
- Developing educational and social opportunities within the community to foster understanding and respect among diverse populations.
- Serving as a resource for residents seeking information on public services involving equal treatment.
- Working with local government to help ensure all residents are treated fairly and without discrimination.
