New Hope's newest police officer, Chelsea Smith, was administered the police oath of office by City Clerk Andrea Phinney at the Aug. 26 New Hope City Council Meeting. Following the oath, Smith's mother had the honor of pinning her badge onto her uniform.
The ceremony, which occurred at the start of the meeting, acknowledged Officer Smith's successful completion of her one-year probationary period and her commitment to serving the New Hope community. Alongside the New Hope City Council and city staff, the council chambers were filled with family, friends and fellow police officers.
Smith, the 116th officer of the New Hope Police Department, began her law enforcement career in 2021 at the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. Smith began her service as a New Hope Police Officer in August 2023 and successfully completed her one-year probationary period on Aug. 7, 2024.
New Hope Police Captain Dave Johnson praised her work ethic and attitude, stating, "Her dedication to the residents of New Hope does not go unnoticed; Chelsea has an incredible work ethic and attitude, and we're lucky to have her."
